Smudge with Me

Materials Needed:

  • Sage bundle or dried herbs (such as white sage, desert sage, sweetgrass, palo santo, etc.)

  • Abalone shell, ceramic bowl, or fireproof vessel

  • Matches or a lighter

  • Feather or fan (optional)

  • A receptacle to catch ashes (like a plate or bowl)

  • Open windows or doors for ventilation

Steps:

1. Set Your Intentions: Begin by clarifying your intentions for the smudging ritual. This might involve cleansing negative energy, inviting positive energy, or setting a specific intention.

2. Prepare the Space: Ensure the space you want to smudge is well-ventilated. Open doors or windows to allow the smoke and negative energy to exit. Remove any clutter and make sure the area is tidy.

3. Ignite the Sage: Light one end of the sage bundle using a match or lighter. Allow the flame to catch and then gently blow it out. The sage should smolder and release smoke.

4. Smudge Yourself: Begin by smudging yourself. Start at your feet and move the smudge stick up and around your body, directing the smoke over yourself using your hand or a feather. Visualize the smoke dispelling negative energies and purifying your aura.

5. Smudge the Space: Walk around your space, moving in a clockwise direction (traditionally seen as the direction of positive energy flow) or as intuitively guided. Use the smudge stick to waft the smoke into corners, around doors and windows, and into any areas where energy might feel stagnant or heavy. While doing this, affirm your intentions for cleansing the space.

6. Focus on Specific Areas: If there are particular areas or objects you want to focus on (like an altar, crystals, or specific rooms), give them extra attention by allowing the smoke to encompass them fully.

7. Extinguish the Sage: Once you've smudged yourself and the space, gently press the burning end of the sage bundle into the receptacle to fully extinguish it. Ensure it's completely out before leaving it unattended.

8. Closing the Ritual: As you finish, express gratitude for the cleansing and purifying energies that have been invoked. You might want to conclude with a positive affirmation or prayer.

9. Dispose of Ashes: After the smudge stick has completely cooled down, you can dispose of the ashes in a respectful manner. Some prefer to bury them in the earth, while others discard them in a natural setting.
